Currency

The Indian rupee (R) is broken down into 100 paise (p.). Paise coins are increasingly rare due to their value, so coins are produced in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 paise, and 1, 2 and 5 rupees. Rupee notes are made in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 – the 1,000 notes are rare due to their high value. The value of the Indian rupee is relatively stable and is linked to a 'basket' of currencies.

Interesting facts

A great deal of effort has gone into creating national parks and sanctuaries for the protection of wildlife across India. The country is home to around 70% of the world's biodiversity prevalent in marine life, land animals
and birds.

The national network for conservation of wildlife was established during the 1970s in India. This was strengthened by the Wildlife Protection Act, created two years later, and led to the formation of up to 60 sanctuaries and over 410 parks. These areas are critical in managing and conserving the population of wildlife across India by providing a natural habitat for their survival.

National parks and wildlife sanctuaries are found throughout India from the mountain tops to the plateaus. With the organisation and support received from the World Wildlife Federation, programmes like crocodile breeding, tiger conservation projects and population management have strengthened this
network enormously.
